La citation est apocryphe car, selon l'American Chesterton Society (http://www.chesterton.org/ceases-to-worship/), cette phrase n'a pas pu être retrouvée dans les écrits de Chesterton.
Robin Rader souligne que cela pourrait venir de la concaténation de deux extraits suivants :
