Cette phrase est la plupart du temps attribuée à Théodore Roosevelt.
Elle figure dans son autobiographie ( chapitre IX), mais Roosevelt indique bien son auteur : Bill Widener :
"I often enjoy a story by some living author so much that I write to tell him so—or to tell her so; ... Bill Widener, of Widener's Valley, Virginia, which sums up one's duty in life: "Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are.""
